There are many different companies that spend millions of dollars each year trying to get your business for insurance. There are many great companies that have been around for a very long time because of many people having different situations with their insurance. I’m going to focus on one specific company. State Farm insurance is the biggest insurance company in the United States overall and is also the biggest Auto insurance company in the United States.

State Farm insurance is the number 31^st company according to the 2009 fortune 500. State Farm car insurance specialist was founded in 1922 as a mutual insurance company that insured a variety if things, from house to life, but was known for auto insurance. State Farm, however, specialized in insurance for farmers. The founder of State Farm believed that because farmers drove less and had fewer losses than regular drivers, he thought that farmers should have to pay less for insurance. This of course made him very popular with farmers and it helped him become a very rich man and his company took off. State Farm then began to insure people for banking and financial services as well. State Farm has grown and grown to become the most widely used and biggest insurance corporation in the United States and Canada. State Farm also has a popular little jingle that was written by a famous recording artist, there slogan of “Like a good neighbor State Farm is there” was written by Barry Manilow.

State Farm insurance does do something that many other insurance companies stopped doing to save money. State Farm has well over 17,000 field agents out around the country with their own personal offices. Unlike companies like GEICO, Progressive, and E*Surance, all which do most of their work by phone or internet. State Farm is more of a face to face person to person kind of company. “Nationwide is on your side” A famous slogan everyone has heard. Nationwide is one the largest distributor of insurance in the United States and its specialty is auto insurance. Nationwide Mutual Insurance was started in 1925 as the Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Columbus Ohio. Farm Bureau’s Insurance had to have 100 customers by law to start up and become a full time insurance company, the agents of Farm Bureau went out at got the company ten times that amount with 1000 early customers.

So from the very beginning Nationwide was on the path to success. The company started off only insuring Ohio state farmers. Three years later in 1928 Farm Bureau began to insure farmers in the surrounding states of West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Vermont and other states. It wasn’t until 1931 that Farm Bureau began to insure residents of small cities, and then it wasn’t until 1934 that they finally began to insure all residents on auto insurance. It was also in 1934 that Farm Bureau began to insure something other than auto insurance. They began to insure fire insurance as well as auto insurance.

In 1955, Farm Bureau Mutual changed its name to Nationwide Insurance, a name by which it’s commonly known today. In the 10 years that followed, Nationwide expanded into Oregon, making the company truly “nationwide”.
